Running out of mortar mid-project means stopping work, making a trip to the store, and hoping your partially set joints do not dry out unevenly. This calculator helps you buy the right amount of mortar mix upfront based on how many bricks or concrete blocks you are laying. For standard modular bricks with 3/8-inch mortar joints, one 80-pound bag of premixed mortar covers roughly 35 bricks. For 8x8x16 concrete masonry units (CMUs or cinder blocks) with standard joints, one 80-pound bag covers about 12 blocks. The difference comes from the much larger joint surface area on concrete blocks. These estimates assume standard joint thickness of 3/8 inch for bricks and 3/8 to 1/2 inch for blocks. If you are using thicker joints for a more rustic look, you will need more mortar. Thin-set applications or veneer work uses significantly less. Mortar comes in several types. Type N is the most common for above-grade walls and general purpose work. Type S is stronger and better for below-grade, retaining walls, and areas with high wind. Type M is the strongest and used for foundations and heavy load-bearing walls. Make sure you are buying the right type for your project before calculating quantity. Buy one or two extra bags as a buffer. Mortar is inexpensive compared to the cost of stopping work, and sealed bags store well for months in a dry location.
