Whether you are building a garden wall, laying a brick patio, or planning a full exterior facade, knowing exactly how many bricks to order saves time, money, and extra delivery charges. This calculator estimates your brick count based on the standard modular brick size used across most of the United States. A standard modular brick measures 3-5/8 inches wide by 2-1/4 inches tall by 7-5/8 inches long. When you add a standard 3/8-inch mortar joint on all sides, each brick covers roughly 21.3 square inches of wall face. That works out to approximately 6.75 bricks per square foot of wall area. For patio and walkway projects laid flat without mortar joints, the coverage changes to about 4.5 bricks per square foot since you are using the wider face. Adjust your numbers accordingly if you are doing a flat lay pattern rather than a vertical wall. Always include a waste factor of at least 5-10 percent. Bricks break during transport, cuts produce waste pieces, and slight variations in mortar joint thickness add up over a large wall. For projects with many cuts like curved walls or herringbone patterns, bump the waste factor to 15 percent. It is much easier to return unused bricks than to try matching a dye lot weeks later when you come up short.
